GO, DOG. GO!
I take my puppy outside to go to the bathroom and all she wants to do is eat leaves and sticks. She won’t go potty, but as soon as we get back in the house, she has an accident on the floor. What am I doing wrong?

– Pam, Cleveland, OH

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, and the great outdoors is so exciting it’s hard for them to concentrate on the business at hand! First, if possible, carry your puppy to a special designated potty area. Keep it free of sticks, pine cones, etc. so that there will be less to distract her. Next, be sure she’s on a leash (six feet is long enough) and while you’re in the "spot," don’t let her pull you around. This isn’t a walk, this is a bathroom stop! Give her 10 to 15 minutes, and if she doesn’t go, pick her up, carry her back in the house, and put her in her crate or a very small confined area that can mimic a crate. Set a timer for 20 minutes and repeat the process.

Once she’s gone to the bathroom outside, she can come inside and have supervised free time. By confining her you're almost guaranteeing that she won’t have an accident in the house, and that's the key in breaking the pattern of her going outside to play and inside to potty!
